Abstract [sv]
The European Monetary Union, EMU, is and has been an important issue for a long time within the EU and its member states. The monetary Union is a step towards deeper integration for the member states, something which is controversial in the sense that, in the longer pespective, this may lead to a “United States of Europe”. It is the aim of this essay to study the attitude of leading persons in the (Swedish) Social Democratic Party toward EMU. I analyse their standpoints through using discourse analysis, after which I channel the various views to opinions at hand. The three schools of thought are EMU-advocates, EMU-incrementalists and sceptics. In order to cover the standpoints of the persons in powerful positions in the Swedish Social Democratic party, I work with four theoretic dimensions: the soveregntity, federal, democracy and economic dimensions, this as to be able to obtain an overview of and value their opinions in an analytical way. Clear is that the different schools of thought view the Monetary Union in different ways.
