Academic learners attitudes towards English
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2000 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to determine the nature of the goals and attitudes of students of English at Halmstad University College and how these affect their education. Attitudes toward five different components of the English language were measured, by the method of a simple questionnaire. Previous research has considered attitudes and goals factors of motivation, which has been shown to have a considerable effect on second language learning. This study shows that the students of Halmstad University College in general are less motivated to study grammar than other subjects and that students with a clear professional goal with their studies are more motivated, especially to grammar studies, than students who aim to improve their knowledge of the language in general. Possible consequences to this is that the students will not have adequate theoretical knowledge when they finish their education and thus the status of university English studies may thus be diminished.
