A study of the Influence of some selected Latin and Greek words on the English language
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
1999 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The English language is a language with many synonyms. This essay deals with some of the reasons why it is like that and how it became like that. Obviously, Latin and Greek have had some significant influence on the English language, partly because of all the invasions England had to endure and partly because both Latin and Greek were used as the scientific language all over Europe a long time ago and still are today. In that way the English language kept many words that originally were borrowed but later on became considered as English. Furthermore, this essay gives some historyof both Latin, Greek and the English language and shows the results of an investigation about whether Latin or Greek has had the most significant influence and whether there is any differnce i occurrence of Latin- and Greek-based words in American English and British English.
