English words in the Swedish language. Differences in attitudes between some Swedish adolescents and adults.
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
1999 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
In this essay the author investigates the differences between Swedish adolescents and adults in their use of English loan words in the Swedish language. The diffences in both the frequency and attitudes toward these loan words are investigated. The informants are also asked to predict in what language area they believe we can except more loan words in English. The differences in use of English loan words and the attitudes towards them was shown to be very clear between the two age groups. The adolescents have a more positive attitude toward the loan words than the adults do, and they use the loan words to a grater extent than the adults do. The future prediction turned out to show roughly the same result in both groups. They all believed that the laguage area”computer and information technology” is the most likely area to have an increased number of English loan words in Swedish.
