Some Intrinsic Difficulties in Second language Vocabulary Acquisition among advanced students of English
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
19990810 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a difference in the learning of words from different word classes. Advanced learners of English were tested on words from the word classes adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs. The result of the test showed that verbs are the most difficult to learn. There are several possible reasons for this difficulty. However, since the meaning of verbs are regarded as comparatively easy to guess, the conclusion is that they might be a neglected word class. Students possibly put more effort into working with words from other word classes, which they find more difficult to guess from the context. Intentional vocabulary learning is still useful at advanced level of English as a chance for students to gdiscover words that have been neglected or have preconceived definitions.
