The personal, social and medical competence of the nursing home nurse

Abstract [sv]
The elderlu population in Sweden is increasing and above all the population of 80 years and older. Thereby also the risk of illness and need for professional nursing and caring will increase. The aim of this study was to describe conceptions of personal, social and medical competences related to the nursing home nurse. The study population included 123 persons and an inquiry formula was used. Seventysix percent answered the questionnaire, which was analysed using the phenomenographic method. During the analysis main and sub-categories of the three competences emerged. Main categories of personal competence were humanitarian relationship and personal strength. Subcategories in humanitarian relationship were : seeing the human being, showing respect, taking interest in the elderlu and empathy. The main category personal strength had subcategories like courage, independence, seeing possibilities and self knowledge. The main category of social comptence was interest in personal relationship which included subcategories like respect, sensitivity, collaboration and leadership. The main category of medical competence comprehended specific competence for nurses working in the community and included subcategories like clinical experience, theoretical knowledge, different specific qualifications and education. The nurse working in geriatric care units must both have general and specific quallifications including personal, social and medical competende. Future research ought to study conceptions of competence involved in the nursing and caring science fo the elderly.
