Abstract [sv]
Heart failure is a complex, chronical condition calling fo efficient control measures due to the risk for emergency hospitalization. In cases of successful treatment, self-care programmes are often of vital importance. This study of litterature aims to define the element in the professional role of the nurse crucial to motivate heart failure patient for self-care programmes and to offer them adequate support. It compromises analysis of 23 scientific reports on self-care performed by heart failure patients. The study concludes, that the nurse should teach patients the basics of self-care, thereby adjusting both to their actual needs and their ability to comprehend this kind of knowledge. It is important that the instruction includes medical treatment, restrictions on sodium intake, balance of body liquids, weight control and physical activities. Elementary insight withiin these fields provides a basic condition for active self-care. The professional competence and the attitude of the nurse are also decisive success factors, as is a structured treatment scheme with the desirable result clearly defined. Monitoring of self-care patients at nurse derected outpatient clinics has proved beneficial to the quality of the care. Readmission was reduced, as was total treatment time. Therefore, the overall economy of the health care sector will be able to gain. In order to describe the effects of self-care programmes from the perspective of the patient, there will be a need for future quality research with a holistic approach to the problem complex attached to self-care in cases of heart failure.
