Uniform pressure effects on the spine in rear end impacts
Halmstad University, School of Business and Engineering (SET).
1999 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [sv]
This examstudy has been done in assosiation with Autoliv Sverige AB. It is devided in two different parts; one investigating part and one part with impact tests concerning the field of rear end impacts. The first part of this study is based on studiing of injuries in the spine below T 1-vertebra. The second part is based on theories that uniform pressure is advantageous for the spine and also reduce the upcoming of whiplash injuries. In this part of the study a series of collision tests has been made, were five different parameters was tested to see how uniform pressure affects the spine. The study showed that rear end impacts at low speed only was origin to AIS 1 injuries in the spine below T 1 vertebra. The most frequent injuries in this part of the spine are acute contractions. The impact tests showed that if the force were divided evenly over the spine, the head acceleration decreased and at the same time head acceleration was extended over longer time interval. Therefore one can say that there is conaction between uniform pressure on the spine and neck injuries.
