Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This Essay deals with sexism and political correctness in the English language. First comes a short history of what kind of sexism that is dealt with; man as a generic noun, he as a generic pronoun, the “feminine” suffixes and other words that contain man. After that becomes a short account of the most resent changes and why we should change our länguage so that it becomes non-sexist. The essay then contains a study of the use of sexist and non-sexist (politically correct) laguage in six different magazines, three American and three Brittish ones. One man´s magazine, one women´s magazine and one news magazine from the two countries respectively. The findings are then discussed and some conclusions are made. The essay ends with an appendix containing a glossary, taken from the Internet, With words that can replace some sexist words and phrases.
