A study of some stylistic factors: How do men and women write differently
Hermansson, Marie

Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)

Abstract [en]
Certain claims about the female vocabulary have been made in previous studies. For example it has been said that women have a smaller and a less abstract vocabulary than men have. Therefore the main question to answer in this essay is; are there any differeces between male/female written language for six different authors, as regards stylistic factors such as type-token ratio, sentence length and lexical density? The authors were chosen randomly from different American magazines, three male and three female ones. The aritcles that have been chosen have been examined for several stylistic factors. The calculations are presented in six tables, which show no visible difference between the authors according to gender. They schow a balanced ability in using one´s vocabulary. The findings in this limited study are therefore an indication that there is no clear difference between the two sexes as regards as som stylistic factors.
