Abstract [en]
In the first phase of rear-end impact the car is travelling with a higher speed than the car occupant which move backward in comparison to the car. In the second phase, the rebound phase, the seat will accelerate the occupant into the seat belt (unless the seat collapses). The aim of this study was to evaluate how different car seats components influence the rebound. Seven Volvo S80 anti whiplash seats were used in fourteen dummy sled tests. The level of crash pulse was 8g and the dummy used was the new Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy. The seats were reinforced differently and every seat was tested with the WHIPS (Whiplash Protection Study) recliner intact as well as welded. The tests with WHIPS recliners intact showed the largest reduction of belt force as compared to the seats with welded recliners.
