Conceptions of a psycho-educational supervision among caregivers of dementia patients living at home

1998 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [sv]
The aim of this study was to describe how caregivers, who had nursed their dementia patients at home, conceived their life situation after having taken part in a psycho-educational supervision programme. Ten caregivers took part in ten meetings held during a period of eight months. Six months after the completion of the programme, the caregivers were interviewed regarding their conception of their present live situation. The questions dealt with five dimensions: the biophysical, socio-cultural, emotional, intellectual and spiritual-existential. The theoretical background was the holistic view on the human being and a behaviour-oriented family therapy. The result revealed that the caregivers had acquired a broader perspective, increased their awareness, was able to share suffering, experienced fellowship, received confirmation as well as gaining the courage to ask for help from outside. Nursing supervision in combination with behaviour-oriented family therapy is a model that can help caregivers to achieve a better lifesituation both for themselves and for their dementia patients at home. Further research should be aimed at finding out wether psycho-educational program also suits caregivers to patients in early stage of dementia.
