På jakt efter kärnan i psykiatrisk omvårdnad
Halmstad University, School of Social and Health Sciences (HOS).
1998 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [sv]
Today, psychiatric nursing is undergoing comprehensive organisation changes both internationally and nationally. It demands for a different varity of professional qualifications and for making clear the core of the psychiatric nursing. The purpose of the study was to look for the core in the psychiatric mental health nursing. Nineteen scientific articles have been examined but no concensus about the core in psychiatric nursing was found. Uncertainty and confusion about the concept of psychiatric nursing can be related to three levels. At first the psychiatric nursing has been dominated by the medical science. Secondly the attempts of the nursing theorists to achieve an autonomous nursing science and at last the difficulties to differentiate the uniqueness of psychiatric nursing in relation to nursing in other contexts. Probably, the core in psychiatric nursing is the relation to and the encounter with mentally ill persons who are extremly sensitive and vulnerable. Through humility and listening, empathy, the psychiatric nurse is abled to take part of the patients lifeworld and their lived experience. ‘the psychiatric nurse is working with mentally illness and because of that the nurse is given a unique position in examining the mentally ill person in a holistic manner. Further research should put the mentally ill person in focus for a successfully development of mental health nursing.
