Abstract [en]
Computers are being used in more critical lapplications where a failure is costly in terms of time, material or even lives. This report focuses on different approaches to accomplish reliable systems with minimal hardware redundancy. Several different approaches to accomplish fault tolerant software, through effective error detection, damage confinement and error recovery, are presented in the first part of the report. This includes N-version programming, recovery blocks an N self checking programming. The concept of language supported exception handling is described and motivated. A suggested model for exceprion handling in C is presented. Forward and backward error recovery methods are further investigated, included concurrent and timing aspects. A recovery block approach in C, using the C exception handling method is also presented.
