Abstract [sv]
Stroke is one of the most common causes of disability and death. Studies has claimed a positive effect of acupuncture treatment in stroke rehabilitation. The aim of this literature review was to determine the effects of acupuncture on mobility, ADL-capacity, aphasia and the length of hospital stay. Also to enlighten reported adverse effects and possble mechanisms involved. Eleven reports were selected but only four fullfilled higher scientific methodology. Without exception, they suggested positive effects on functional recovery. No serious adverse effects were reported and different mechanisms involved were discussed but not confirmed. More trials are required to clarify the mechanism of the effects. Also the patients experiences of the treatment and effects on life-quality needs to be examined. If the mechanism involved can be clearified and further research can confirm the positive results acupuncture could be as useful tool for the nurse in the stroke care.
