Aphasia Treatment from a Nursing Approach
Halmstad University, School of Social and Health Sciences (HOS).
1997 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this literature review was to investigate methods used to treat aphasia, to get answers to the following questions: When does the speech pathologist starts the assessment of hte patient and the training, and where is the training executed? Are there other persons than the speech pathologist involved in the treatment? For which aphasics is the method selected appropriate, what is the purpose of the method used and what is the result? Which variables, except language deficit, are of importance for the results of the treatment? It is important for the personnel to have knowledge of aphasia and its consequences for the patient. The articles were from 1974 to 1995 and gave broad view of aphasia therapy. They describe different kinds of treatment. Both case studies and group studies were preformed. The result showed no unambigous answers to the questions asked. Furthermore it was obvious that variables, such as emotional status etc., which can influence the outcome of the treatment, were not examined in the articles. The nursing staff were mentioned but their importance for the results of the treatment were not investigated. It is obvious that this is a domain which needs research from a nursing perspective and development of the co-operation between the speech pathologists and the nursing staff.
