Abstract [sv]
The purpose of the study is to describe the relative´s experiences of terminal care. This is a phenomenological study. Phenomenology seeks to borrow other people´s experiences in order to understand a deeper meaning. Data were collected from interwiews of three close relatives to deceased older persons. Efforts were made to note themes and meaning units and to stay as close as possible to the relative´s own words. The findings indicated that the relatives are not participating or have not energy to modify care decisions. Frequent transfers of the very ill, older patients cause major strains for patients and relatievs and hinder continuity of care. Relatives feel very lonely and left with a heavy burden of responsibility. According to these findings, the desirable holistic view of the patient and relatives are not applied to its full extent, supposedly depending on shortness of time for the staff to create a relation to the relativex and giving them important support.
