Abstract [sv]
Pain is something that we experience. It is invisible and subjective. The aim of this study was to investigate and to describe how persons with prolonged backpain experience that the living with constant pain has influenced their lives. The intention of focusing these questions was to contribute to a greater understanding of persons with prolonged backpain and to a preparedness of aktion among health professionals when meeting these persons. This study uses a qualitative approach. In the data collection eight persons were interviewed who had lived with prolonged backpain between ten months and nine years. All interviews were asked the same main question: “In what way do you experience that the pain has influenced your life?” The results show that the pain had effected their lives in some way both socially and mentally. They missed their work, which they had enjoyed, and worried about the future. Constant pain and mistrust from people they met caused a change in their mood and lower selfesteem. A certain pattern could be seen in coping with the pain - most energy was used “to fight”. The conclusion is that prolonged backpain is a multidimensional problem that may effect every aspect of a persons life. It is of great importance that support is offered at an early stage. Here the nurse may have an important role for providing support and for guiding the patient regarding how to cope with the pain and living a meaningful life despite the pain.
