Elderly person's perceptions of sexuality (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sexuality is an essential part of human health and something that everyone is entitled to regardless of age. Talking about sexuality with older people is often perceived by healthcare professionals as uncomfortable and taboo. With increasing age naturally problems such as various diseases and age-related changes that may affect sexuality will also appear. The aim of the literature review was to describe older people's perception of sexuality. The study is based on 14 qualitative and quantitative articles, and was carried out after an inductive approach. The results showed that intimacy, acceptance, inability, loss and ignorance were the main perceptions of sexuality. It was found that sexual activity such as sexual intercourse was no longer as important in older age. Instead the feeling of just being close to someone played a much more important role. Loss of a partner or illness was the main reasons for not being sexually active. More information from healthcare professionals about how older people can solve their problems was seen as desirable. Further research on older people's perception of sexuality is needed to increase nurse's knowledge.
