In Halmstad, Halland, there is a landfill that has been used as a dump for household waste since the
middle of the 1950s and from the middle of the 1970s with the purpose to deposit e.g. slag and
ashes. At the location of this landfill site there is also a pond with the purpose to store and buffer
leachate and then to pump this into a wetland system for cleaning before the water finally reaches
its recipient Nissan. This wetland system is not operating on a maximal level at this time and is
suffering from functional problems. Due to this the processed water that goes into Nissan doesn’t
have the water quality that is wanted. The purpose with this master thesis is to find concrete
solutions and approaches for these functional problems in order to once again get a well functioning
wetland system that can provide water with a satisfying quality.
Observations have been made on site at the wetland system and functional problems that can affect
the wetland systems overall effectiveness have been identified. These problems have then been
photographed and documented. In order to deal with the current problems immediate actions are needed. Concerning the nitrification process there are more effective methods available than the aeration construction that is today. A more efficient method would be to use land overflow in order to get a well functioning nitrification process. Another problem that also needs immediate attention is the current overflowing between the wetlands. This is occurring partly due to the vegetation which needs to be cut in form of lines in the vertical direction of the water flow and the empty lines should be removed of sediment. The connecting pipes between the wetlands needs to be cleaned from litter in order to avoid further overflowing and also needs to be inspected in order to see if there are any damages. The outlets from wetland four should be replaced with another construction in form of vertical pipes that are capable of controlling the water level much more efficient. The embankment around the wetlands needs to be strengthened and a new embankment is needed at the pond to avoid leakage to a nearby ditch. Last but not least the wetland system at Skedala needs to have regular inspections and maintenance of the wetland system in order to keep track and by that avoiding future problems.
