The ambition with this study was to investigate and ex-pand our understanding of if and in that case how fiction influences students in developing their own identity and their views of others. We were also interested in examine how students choose the fictional text that they read, what influence them in the reading itself and what signification the subject of Swedish has and consequently the teachers of Swedish signification for students fictional reading. The result of the study showed that fiction does have a signifi-cant role in the development of students own identity and personal positions and views on other people. Furthermore did the students that took part in the study express that they had problems in finding suitable fiction and found themselves between childhood and adulthood. The study showed that the responsibility of the subject of Swedish is significant and the teachers’ aim should be to create good traditions of fictional reading. The students also stressed that they thought that discussing and analysing fiction was beneficial.
