Abstract [en]

Brownification of freshwater ecosystems, exemplified by Lake Bolmen in southern Sweden, is increasingly concerning due to its adverse impacts on water quality and ecosystem health. Despite its significance, understanding the mechanisms driving brownification, particularly regarding peat extraction, remains incomplete. This study investigates peat extraction's effects on water color in Lake Bolmen to address these knowledge gaps. The aim is to examine how peat extraction alters water color and to determine the relationship between precipitation events and absorbance values at 420nm, as well as the influence of catchment characteristics. Water samples were collected from multiple locations along the major tributaries, Murån and Ryds Å. Results reveal a significant increase in water coloration in the tributaries Murån and Ryds Å impacted by peat extraction, with seasonal fluctuations in absorbance values correlated with precipitation. Nuanced differences in absorbance values between the tributaries suggest varied responses influenced by catchment characteristics. In conclusion, this study enhances understanding of brownification dynamics in Lake Bolmen, offering insights for water quality management to mitigate brownification and preserve freshwater ecosystems.
