Abstract [en]

Background: Adequate sleep is crucial to children's health, especially for those with ADHD who often experience sleep disturbances alongside their neurodevelopmental impairments.

Aim: The study aimed to investigate differences in health-related factors after a sleep intervention among children with uncomplicated ADHD, focusing on those with and without clinical sleep problems.

Method: The cross-sectional study involved 83 children aged 6–14 years diagnosed with uncomplicated ADHD and perceived sleep problems, divided into two groups based on clinical sleep problems. Data from a 16-week follow-up from a sleep intervention project were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney u-test, t-test, and chi-square/fisher's exact test.

Results: The results indicated that the group with clinical sleep problems demonstrated more negative health outcomes, which were shown by a higher degree of insomnia, worsening ADHD symptoms, anxiety symptoms in the form of feeling tense, and self-care problems compared to those who did not have clinical sleep problems.

Conclusion: This study highlighted differences in health variables, depending on sleep problems, in children with uncomplicated ADHD, indicating worse health outcomes for those with clinical sleep problems. Longitudinal studies are needed for a fuller understanding of the impact.
