To read text and pictures : A literature study on picture books as a tool for development of reading comprehension (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The literature study’s purpose was to compile practical knowledge for teachers about how children’s books with pictures can be a part of reading comprehension instruction. The research question was "How can picture books be used for the development of reading comprehension in students, according to existing research?" The study’s data was collected mainly through searches via search strings, but also through manual searches and included both international and national research. Two dissertations and seven articles with relevance for the purpose were chosen. The analysis work of the dissertations and the articles took inspiration from thematic analysis and resulted in four overall themes. The main results showed that picture books, to develop reading comprehension, can be used for instruction about reading pictures, about conversations about picture books, about read-aloud of picture books and about reading comprehension strategies through picture books. Based on the results, it was concluded that students, regardless of age, appreciate the picture book due to its multimodal attributes. It was also found that teaching reading comprehension using the picture book as a basis requires thorough preparation from the teacher, but is also rewarding for both teacher and students.
