Patients' experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Varje dag insjuknar 160 personer i cancer i Sverige.

Abstract [en]

Background: Every day 160 people are diagnosed with cancer in Sweden. Cancer is when cells divide uncontrollably in the body and change the body's normal cellular function. People who receive a cancer diagnosis may react depending on their previous experiences. Therefore, it is important for nurses to be aware of how patients react to such messages in order to provide good nursing care. Aim: The aim was to highlight adult patients' experiences of receiving a cancer diagnosis. Method: A general literature study based on ten original qualitative articles. Results: Three categories emerged (1) Reactions to the cancer diagnosis with subcategories: common reactions and concern about bodily changes (2) Environment and communication (3) Need for support with subcategories: the importance of health care professionals and the presence of relatives. Conclusion: Newly diagnosed patients with cancer experienced strong reactions such as fear, anxiety and denial. Patients were worried about how their bodies would change after treatments. They also described how important it was to get support from family members and health professionals to cope with the news.
