Nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with sepsis : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Sepsis is defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a disturbed systemic response to infection. Sepsis is a complex condition, the symptoms can be diffuse and difficult to distinguish from other disease states. The nurse has a crucial role in sepsis, as early initiation of treatment reduces mortality. Aim: The purpose was to highlight the nurse's experiences of caring for patients with sepsis. Method: The study was a general literature study with an inductive approach. Three databases were searched where eight articles were included in the study. All eight articles were quality checked, processed and summarized. Results: Three categories emerged in the results: knowledge and competence, organizational structures and communication. The nurses' experiences highlighted that more knowledge about sepsis and how identification and care should be carried out is necessary. High patient flow, unclear guidelines and high workload emerged as organizational shortcomings. Language barriers between nurse and patient resulted in essential information for care not appearing in communication. Conclusion: Level of knowledge, organizational structures and communication were barriers to the nurses being able to perform adequate care. All factors contributed to delays in the identification and treatment of patients with sepsis. Further research and education in care for patients with sepsis is needed to conduct evidencebased and person-centered care.
