Abstract [en]
The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revolution has brought new opportunities for the improvement of patients’ outcomes; however, despite these advancements, some patients have to travel abroad to have examinations to discover the origin of their pain. In this regard, the weight-bearing MRI is one innovative imaging technology that provides complementary information regarding the root cause of the patient's pain. The absence of such innovative technology in Sweden was the trigger for this study, which aimed to reveal insights into understanding the hindrances to adopting innovative medical imaging technologies in the Swedish healthcare system by investigating the phenomenon influencing the adoption of weight-bearing MRI in the Swedish healthcare system through Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation theory (2003). The single case exploratory study has led the investigation by 14 semi-structured interviews through the social system of weight-bearing MRI stakeholders, such as healthcare professionals, patient organizations, and regional and national guidelines providers. We reached the answer through the research question, "What are the hinders to the adoption of Weight-bearing MRI in the Swedish Healthcare System?". Eight factors were identified as hinders to the adoption of weight-bearing MRI in the Swedish healthcare system: 1) Coercive procurement leads to institutional isomorphism; 2) Clinical guidelines are considered missing; 3) Scientific evidence is considered missing; 4) Change-agent is missing; 5)Weight-bearing MRI's "true upright" position is not considered a USP; 6) Weight-bearing MRI's "true upright" position is not considered profitable; 7) Weight-bearing MRI's "true upright" position causes image interpretation uncertainty; 8) Weight-bearing MRI's low-field strength is considered low-quality images. One theoretical aspect of this study is exploring the theory of the isomorphism mechanism within the Swedish healthcare system. Moreover, the study shed light on the research topic to inform healthcare policymakers, decision-makers, and researchers in adopting medical imaging innovation in the Swedish healthcare system with theoretical insights and practical considerations.
