The impact of hemodialysis on patients' quality of life : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The number of patients with chronic kidney failure continues to increase worldwide. When the kidney function gets worse, a kidney replacement therapy is needed. Haemodialysis is a treatment alternative that takes place at a treatment facility two to three times a week for three to four hours per session. The time-consuming treatment can affect the patients’quality of life (QoL) because it means a major life change. Aim: To highlight the patients’ experience of QoL during haemodialysis treatment. Method: The study was designed as a general literature study. Twelvearticles were analysed and formed three themes. Results: The results of the patients' experiences resulted in three themes. The three themes were the patients' experience of symptoms, the patients' ability of accepting the illness and the patients' experience of social conditions. Conclusion: The patients' everyday life is affected by the haemodialysis, which affect the QoL negatively. Nursing includes helping the patient improve its QoL.Conversations about the patients' QoL and the use of an existing measuring instrument allow the nurse to identify the patients' individual need for care related to QoL. Further research on nursing interventions to alleviate patient suffering from haemodialysis treatment and increase QoL may be needed.
