Healthcare professionals´ experience of personcentered wound treatment: A qualitative study

Abstract [en]
Background: Chronic wounds can affect health and lead to difficulties in daily life. Purpose: the aim was to explore healthcare professionals' experience of working person-centered in wound treatment. Method: Interviews with 21 district nurses, nurses and assistant nurses were performed and analysed using abductive qualitative content analysis from the three parts narrative, partnership, and documentation in the framework on person-centered care of Ekman (2011). The results showed that healthcare professionals worked person-centered in wound treatment, which was shown in the category of narrative: through seeing the whole person and the underlying causes, starting from the person´s goals and preferences as set points and motivating the person to accept treatment. The category of partnership included: building a relationship of trust with the person, adapting healthcare to the person and focusing on relief of severe symptoms. Finally, the category of documentation implied: reading about the wound treatment in the patient's record, documenting for continuity and updating and handling obstacles in information transfer. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals in the study worked person-centered without always labelling their work as in the theory of person-centered care. The person-centered care in wound treatment contained the narrative and plan for the work, the establishing of the partnership, and how it became gathered and accessible through documentation
