Motivational Profiles, Coaching Behaviours and Intention to Dropout in Swedish Female Ice Hockey Players: A Latent Profile Analysis
2023 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
Abstract [en]

Background: The purpose of the present study was to identify latent motivational profiles out of motivational regulations among female ice hockey players in Sweden using a person-centered approach, and examine how identified profiles relate to coaching behaviours and dropout.

Method: In a cross-sectional design, 140 Swedish female ice hockey players (Mage = 21.66, SD= 7.50 years of age) answered a questionnaire pack that measured motivational regulations in ice hockey, perceived coaching behaviours and intention to dropout. Latent profile analysis was used to identify motivational profiles.

Results: Two profiles were identified; ambiguously motivated and self-determined. Need-thwarting coaching behaviours predicted latent profile membership and being a member of the ambiguously motivated profile was associated with having a significantly higher intention to dropout.

Conclusion: In line with the Self-Determination Theory, results support that need-thwarting coaching behaviours are connected with a higher degree of dropout. Coaches should be educated in need-supportive coaching behaviours to enhance a high-quality motivational climate.
