Overweight, obesity and the increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2 : a literature study on health promoting nursing (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic and progressive condition. Overweight contributes to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, overweightand obesityis increasing every year. The nurse's greatest health-promoting opportunity is found in the everyday meeting with patients. Aim: To illustrate health-promoting interventions for individuals with overweight or obesity. Method: A general literature study based on scientific articles where the results were divided into data units that were coded. The codes were categorized and structured thematically. Results: The results are based on eight scientific articles that generated three categories: the nurse's health promotion interventions, to givehealth promotion interventions and to recieve health promotion interventions. Providing health promotion interventions reduces weight, BMI and waist circumference as a result of lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and healthy eating. Going throughan intervention is also important for the patient's motivation. Regardless type of intervention, the nurse can have a central and supportive rolefor the patient. Conclusion: Through health-promoting nursing, the nurse in collaboration with other professionals can provide person-centered care that increases the patient's participation and self-care ability, a factor that contributes to improved health.
