Does social media affect us? : A qualitative study of young adults´experiences and preceptions of social media (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to increase our understanding of how girls and boys in age 20-25 experience and are affected by social media with  aspects of power, integration and gender. The study is based on the question, How are young adults' perceptions and experiences affected by social media? which affects the experience of how social media can affect the person. The empirical study has been shaped through semi-structured interviews, furthermore the study is based on a Hermeneutic approach where the interviews have guided the theory that is highlighted. The empirics have then been analyzed using the theories: Power, Interaction and Gender. The results show that the experiences, as well as the influence of social media, are both positive and negative in relation to the individual's own perceptions. The experiences are largely unambiguous, even if some variation depending on individual factors is encountered. The heavier emphasized result in the survey was the experience of violations and cyberbullying on social media. In parallel, the respondents have indicated that social cohesion has increased efficiency, as social media has contributed and facilitated socializing and keeping in touch with other individuals.
