Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, and climate change and urbanization affect species and species' habitats. Rental properties (multi-family houses) are a common form of housing in cities. Paved surfaces and cut lawns often surround areas around rental apartments, which are disadvantages to various ecosystem services such as biodiversity. This study investigated how biodiversity in an urban environment can be promoted on rental apartments properties. Mixed methods were used to answer the questions in the form of a literature study, two questionnaire studies and a case study. The results show that areas surrounding rental apartments have the potential to promote ecosystem services like biodiversity, improve microclimate and pollination. It requires interest, commitment and knowledge from tenants and landlords. According to the survey, there is an interest among both  tenants and landlords in promoting biodiversity. It is mainly the social effect that benefits from rental apartments. Access to private green spaces contributes to better health, opportunities for recreation and reducing inequalities in society.
