When breastfeeding does not work : The child health care-nurse´s experience of providing support - A qualitative interview-study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Getting started with a functioning breastfeeding is individual. For some women it works without further barriers while for others it can be difficult. Purpose: To shed light on the child health care nurse's experience of supporting women when breastfeeding does not work. Method: A qualitative interview study conducted with the support of a semi-structured interview guide. The data analysis was performed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three categories, of which three subcategories belonged to each individual main category: Reasons why breastfeeding does not work; physiological factors; demands placed on the breastfeeding woman; the breastfeeding woman's own expectations. When breastfeeding does not work; support the woman in her decision; the importance of normalizing alternatives to fulltime breastfeeding; the importance of support from partners and relatives. The specialist nurse's support for the breastfeeding woman; experience of providing support; collaboration in the care-chain; challenges to provide good support. Conclusion: When breastfeeding did not work for the breastfeeding woman, it was important that the child health care-nurse offered an unpretentious and responsive treatment and set aside enough time to be able to create security and trust.
