Male elite football player's experiences of social support during rehabilitation after a severe sports injury (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The present study is based on two frameworks; a developed version of Psychosocial Strategies for Different Phases of Sports Injury Rehabilitation by Ivarsson et al. (2018) and the Social Support Theory by Lakey and Cohen (2000). The aim was to examine how male elite football players experienced social support during the various phases of rehabilitation following a severe sports injury. A qualitative design was used where the interview guide was based on above mentioned theories and previous research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 male elite football players who returned to football post a severe sports injury. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) was used which generated in four main themes, 13 subthemes and several codes that answer the two issues presented in the study. The result suggests that different experiences were present in the different four main themes. Regarding the first theme (pre-injury), elite football players experienced demands in performing at elite level. The second theme (reaction to injury), showed that the feeling of uncertainty about the meaning of the injury was prominent. The third theme (reaction to rehabilitation) included participants experiencing a gradual decrease in negative emotion and an increase in positive emotions during rehabilitation. Concerning the fourth theme (reaction to return to sport), the participants expressed mixed feelings towards participating in football. Findings of the present study show that male elite football players feel that social support is important during the rehabilitation process, especially emotion and information support. It appears that social support is most important in the second phase of rehabilitation because of uncertainty about the meaning of the injury.
