The nurse’s attitudes of treating patients with alcohol abusewith a focus on female patients : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Alcohol can be associated with festive occasions and celebrations. High alcohol consumption on the other hand can affect the quality of life and lead to an addiction that has a negative impact on the person and the human body. This can lead to social, physical and mental problems in everyday life. Purpose: To illustratethe nurses’ attitudes of treating patients with alcohol abuse with focus on female patients. Method: The method was designed as a general literature study and was based on seven scientific articles. In the analysis, relevant information was colormarked and the data were then grouped into overall sub- and main categories. Results: Two main categories were identified i) the nurses’ attitudes, and ii) the stigmatized woman. Lack of knowledge and commitment among nurses has a negative effect on patients with alcohol abuse. Despite this, a good response emerged where nurses had a holistic approach where the patient is treated as a dignified person and a person behind the addiction. Conclusion: The nurse’s attitude varied due to personal circumstances, knowledge and experience. Research into describing the nurse’s attitude of treating women and men’s with alcohol abuse from a specific gender perspective is lacking and more research in this area is needed.
