Bakgrund: Inkontinens beskrivs som ett folkhälsotillstånd som ökar i relation till en åldrande befolkning och kan skapa olustkänslor, skam, isolering och depression. Tillståndet ökar med stigande ålder men orsak eller form av inkontinens utreds sällan bland äldre. Insatser görs för att bevara värdighet inom inkontinensvård, parallellt som kunskapsbrist, dålig kommunikation och avsaknad av teamarbete begränsar möjligheten för värdig inkontinensvård. Syftet var att belysa vårdpersonalens erfarenhet av att främja en värdig inkontinensvård för äldre personer på särskilt- och ordinärt boende med insatser från kommunal hälso- och sjukvård. Metoden var tematisk analys med induktiv ansats med två fokusgruppsintervjuer samt fyra individuella intervjuer. Resultat: Fyra teman identifierades: Bemötande,

Kommunikation, Individanpassad omvårdnad och Tid. Slutsats: Distriktssköterskor och sjuksköterskor belyste värdet av kunskap om utredning, bedömning och uppföljning för värdig inkontinensvård. Undersköterskor och vårdbiträden betonade att tiden har stor betydelse och är begränsande faktor. Ett empatisk och respektfullt bemötandet av patienten var en grundläggande förutsättning för att främja integritet och bevara patientens autonomi och värdighet. Kommunikation var viktigt för att uppnå en värdig och individanpassad inkontinensvård och resultatet visar att värdig inkontinensvård behöver belysas generellt inom kommunal hälso- och sjukvård. 

Background: Incontinence is described as a public health condition that increases in relation to an aging population and can create feelings of unease, shame, isolation and depression. The condition increases with age. Incontinence in the elderly is rarely noticed and investigated. Efforts is done to preserve the dignity of the elderly in incontinence care, at the same time a lack of knowledge, poor communication and lack of teamwork are factors that limit the possibility of providing dignified incontinence care. Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight the experience of healthcare professionals in promoting dignified incontinence care for elderly people in special and ordinary housing with interventions from municipal health care. Method: A thematic analysis with an inductive approach including two focus group discussions and four individual interviews. Result: Four themes where identified: Conduct, Communication, Personalized Nursing and Time. Conclusion: Nurse practitioners and registered nurses highlight the value of knowledge about investigation, assessment and follow-up for dignified incontinence care. Assistant nurses and care assistants emphasized that time is of great importance. Communication as well as empathetic and respectful conduct of the patient was a basic precondition for promoting integrity and preserving the patient´s autonomy and dignity, and after all the results show that dignified incontinence care needs to be highlighted in general in municipal health care.
