Losing a body part - Patients' perceived quality of life after an amputation in the lower extremitites : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

I livskvaliteten ingår fler faktorer än bara hälsan.

Abstract [en]

Background: After an amputation, patients undergo a major life change. The quality of life is something that affects the patient both negatively and positively after a change in life. The quality of life includes more factors than just the health. Aim: The aim with this literature study was to describe the patients ́ quality of life after an amputation in the lower extremitites. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductiv approach. Results were retrieved from 10 different articles from three different databases and analyzed as content analysis. Results: The result are shown in three different themes, support that increase the quality of life, the impact of amputation on everyday life and the nurse support for increased quality of life. In the second theme, four sub-themes emerged as aids, everyday activites, pain and finances. Each theme focuses on the factors that affected the patient’s quality of life most based on the outcome articles. Conclusion: Patients’ quality of life is affected after an amputation due to several different factors. Factors that were shown to affect the patient’s quality of life were phantom pain, changes in finances and difficulties with everyday activities such as driving a car. Support from family and friends also played a major role in increasing the patient’s quality of life after an amputation. It is important for the nurse to identify the patient’s quality of life both physically and mentally to facilitate the time after an amputation.
