Patients experiences of early palliative care in oncology : a literaturereview (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Bakground: Palliative care is often used only at a late stage in the course of the disease. There is still a perception that palliative care is only end-of-life care, which can be an obstacle to early implementation of palliative care. By providing palliative care at an early stage the patient's suffering decreases and their quality of life increases during the remaining time of their life. Aim: The purpose was to illustrate patients experiences of early palliative care in oncology. Method: The study was created as a literature study through a content analysis with an inductive approach.Ten articles with qualitative and quantitative methods have been used. Result: Three main categories were identified: Importance of getting information and knowledge, Importance of good communication and relationship and Importance of more effective symptom relief. Early palliative care led to more effective symptom relief, increased quality of life, increased participation in decision-making, more time for conversations and preparation for the future. The patients felt that they were seen as a person and that their needs could be fulfilled. Conclusion: Patients experienced it beneficial with early palliative care. More research and resources are needed to implement early palliative care in more care units.
