Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to recognize how professionals in the banking sector experience change in leadership during a pandemic. It will be brought to attention how change is characterized, and how managers take action to maintain trust and motivate employees. Through a qualitative study based on interviews with both employees and managers in the banking sector, the study's research question is: How does professionals in the banking sector experience changes in leadership during a pandemic. The result of the study shows that most managers and employees experience transformative leadership as the dominant leadership style, both before and during the pandemic. However, there are also characteristics from democratic and situational leadership. Some of the key factors that managers have focused on during the pandemic have been supporting, understanding, and adapting. As a result of change in leadership, methods of communication have changed, control has increased, and motivation has decreased. Furthermore, trust has increased as employees have been given more responsibility than prior to the pandemic.
