Bakgrund: I ett samhälle som tillmäter utseendet stor betydelse kan det medföra såväl interpersonella som intrapersonella utmaningar att drabbas av en framträdande utseendedeformering. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva personliga upplevelser av att leva med ett icke medfött, synligt deformerat utseende. Metod: Uppsatsen är en litteraturstudie på kandidatnivå. Studien är utförd med induktiv ansats, 11 kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar analyserades med innehållsanalys. Resultat: Resultatet presenteras i tre huvudkategorier: Oönskad uppmärksamhet, Behov av stöd och Strävan efter hanterbarhet. Livet efter en utseendedeformering präglas av oönskad uppmärksamhet från andra människor vilket kan vara svårt att värja sig emot och leder till stigma. Uppmärksamheten skapar självmedvetenhet och stjäl uppmärksamhet från livet självt. Behov av stöd och bekräftelse ansågs vara viktigt i bearbetningen och övergången till en ny, förändrad livsvärld. Kärleksfulla närstående, samhörighet med andra drabbade samt professionell bekräftelse och information utgjorde viktiga element i den existentiella läkningsprocessen. Konklusion: Sjuksköterskor kan spela en viktig roll för patientens bearbetning av tillståndet och en sund övergång till en ny, balanserad tillvaro. Även om vissa upplevelser var framträdande i resultatet, framkom en komplexitet i vilka faktorer som påverkade upplevelserna. Ett inlyssnande och medmänskligt förhållningssätt i syfte att stärka patientens egen hälsoprocess, med patientens livsvärld i centrum, bör eftersträvas.

Background: In a society that attaches great importance to appearance, suffering from a prominent disfigurement can result in interpersonal- as well as intrapersonal challenges. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of living with a visible non-congenital disfigurement. Method: The thesis is a literature review at the bachelor’s level. The study was conducted with an inductive approach, 11 qualitative scientific articles were analyzed through content analysis. Results: The result is presented in three main categories: Unwanted attention, Support needs and Striving for manageability. Life after disfigurement is characterized by unwanted attention from other people, which can be challenging to fend off and creates stigma. The attention creates self-awareness and steal attention from life itself. The need for support and confirmation was important in the processing and transition to a new, altered lifeworld. Loving relatives, connection with other disfigured and professional confirmation and information were important elements in the existential healing process. Conclusion: Nurses can play an important role in patients processing of the condition and a healthy transition to a new balanced life. Although some experiences were prominent in the result, a complexity emerged in what factors affected the experiences. Thus, a listening, compassionate approach, in order to strengthen the patient’s own health process, with the patient’s lifeworld as the center is desirable.
