Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how the municipality of Helsingborg, Sweden intend to integrate immigrants as their new residents, and to ascertain what factors already integrated immigrants in Helsingborg mean have been crucial for their personal integration processes. This to possibly find any connection between their personal experiences of integrating in and to Helsingborg and the municipality’s effort in the matter. To achieve this a document examination of documents, linked to the integration related efforts, from the municipality of Helsingborg has been done and combined with interviews with integrated immigrants from the city about their integration processes. Two interviews has also been done with two different actors from whitin the municipality about their effort to support the integration related work; Gruppen för Religionsdialog and Helsingborgshem. The results of the document examination and interviews has been analyzed through two theories of how actors such as Helsingborg municipality should and/or should not work with integration; José Alberto Diaz’s and Roger Andersson’s. The study shows that Helsingborg municipality work with integration in many different ways that are related to the two theories, for example through housing and education in Swedish, among many other initiatives. The study also shows that the key factor, according to already integrated immigrants, for a successful integration is an employment or studies along with other important factors, such as the opportunity to live in a ethnically diversed neighborhood.
