Healthcare personnel’s experiences of debriefing after a critical incident : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Healthcare personnel may be in need of crisis support after profession-related critical incidents. Debriefing is used as crisis support for healthcare personnel, but the effect is debated. Aim: The aim was to illustrate healthcare personnel’s experiences of debriefing after a critical incident. Method: A general literature study was done. Ten articles were analysed with inspiration from content analysis. Result: Two main categories emerged with associated subcategories: Perceived need of debriefing with associated subcategories Emotional need and Professional need of development as well as Aspects that affect the effect and use of debriefing with associated subcategories Organisational and individual aspects and Aspects regarding the debriefing’s structure. The healthcare personnel felt that debriefing could satisfy the emotional need and the professional need of development after critical incidents as well as lead to better care and safer care. Although, the use and effect of debriefing was affected by several environmental factors. Conclusion: Healthcare personnel have a large need of crisis support like debriefing, but the healthcare setting hampers effective use of debriefing. Further research is required to be able to use debriefing effectively, alternatively to find more suitable forms of crisis support for healthcare personnel.
