Glaukom är en kronisk ögonsjukdom som kan orsaka blindhet. Största riskfaktorn är att trycket i ögat är för högt och den vanligaste behandlingen är trycksänkande ögondroppar. Det är viktigt att patienterna har insikt i sin sjukdom och vilken påverkan det kan ha på synen om de inte följer ordinerad behandling. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur patienter med glaukom upplever information gällande sin sjukdom och behandling. Studien genomfördes som en integrativ litteraturstudie enligt Wittemore och Knafl (2005) där tidigare utgivna artiklar sammanställs för att noga studera ett problem inom omvårdnad. Litteraturstudiens resultat baseras på 17 vetenskapliga artiklar. I analysen framkom fyra kategorier: vikten av personlig kontakt, vikten av skriftlig information, bristande information och missledande information. Det är individuellt hur dessa kategorier upplevs av patienterna. Patienterna upplever att vårdpersonalen har en viktig roll när de ska erhålla information, samtidigt uppger andra patienter att de föredrar skriftlig information. Många patienter upplever informationen som bristande eller missledande därför är det av stor vikt att sjukvårdspersonalen är tydlig och pedagogisk både gällande informationens innehåll och på vilket sätt de ger informationen. Förslag på framtida forskning är att undersöka mer specifikt vad patienten efterfrågar för information gällande glaukom och hur den ska utformas för att de på bästa sätt ska tillgodogöra sig den.

Glaucoma is a chronic disease that can cause blindness. The risk factor is increased eye pressure and the aim of the treatment is to lower the pressure with eye drops. It is important that patients have health literacy and understand what impact it may have on their vision if they do not follow prescribed treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore how patients with glaucoma experience information about their disease and treatment. The study was conducted as an integrative review that summarizes past empirical or theoretical literature to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a particular healthcare problem (Wittemore & Knafl, 2005). The literature study was based on seventeen articles. The analysis revealed four categories: the importance of personal contact, the importance of written information, lack of information and misleading information. How patients experienced these categories is individual. Patients experience that healthcare professionals play an important role in obtaining information, at the same time, other patients indicate that they prefer written information. Many patients experience the information as lacking or misleading. It is therefore important that healthcare professionals are clear and educational both regarding the content of the information and how they provide the information. Proposals for future research is to investigate more specifically what the patient request for information on glaucoma and how it should be designed to assimilate.
