Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Involuntary childlessness has proven to have a negative effect on women’s psychological health and social life. Nurses may meet these women in care, regardless of workplace and that's why it's important to be aware of how the experience of involuntary childlessness can affect these women’s lives. To illustrate women’s experience of involuntary childlessness. A general literature study with a content analysis based on 13 scientific articles. The result showed that women who suffer from involuntary childlessness experience a change in their self-image. Many women feel that they lose a part of themselves and experience doubt in their role as a woman. The outcome often leads to alienation both in society and through self-isolation when the women tries to avoid social situations. To be involuntarily childless mean that the women are forced to adapt their lives in certain ways. It’s common to experience a lack of control in life because they themselves cannot affect the childlessness and some feel that they are forced to adapt to a future without children. Being involuntarily childless affects many women negatively. It is important that a nurse is aware that this is also a health problem in order to apply the most effective and informed approach to treatment.
