How the nurses’ leadership can promote patient safety. : A literature review. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Every year, across the globe, one in ten patients suffer injuries whilst in health care, which could have been avoided if adequate measures had been taken. All health care professionals have an individual and a common responsibility to contribute to a high standard of patient safety. Nurses make up the majority of health care professionals and therefore have a great responsibility to contribute to patient safety through legislation, ethical principles and nurses’ six core competencies. Within their role as a nurse, they also have a leadership role and should lead, motivate and engage co-workers to develop and enhance the quality of care and patient safety. Aim: To explore how nurses’ leadership can promote patient safety. Method: A literature review with a content analysis based on ten research articles. Result: The results show that nurses need the right set of circumstances to be able to promote patient safety through leadership. It is significant that the nurses within their profession take responsibility. Empowerment and autonomy promotes the nurses taking responsibility. To be involved in decision-making within the organization gives a higher commitment to improving the health care unit. Teamwork with good relationships between health care teams and other health care professionals, as well as efficient and open communication promotes patient safety. Conclusion: Nurses need the right set of circumstances and they need to take responsibility to lead, motivate and engage co-workers to promote patient safety together. To be involved in decision-taking with other health care professionals and have a good communication contributes to a good work environment and an awareness that promotes patient safety.
