Nurses intervention for malnutrition in the elderly : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Nurses encounter of aged people who are malnourished or at risk of nutritional deficiency is expected in their line of work. The profession therefore has a responsibility to identify elderly with malnutrition and to take evidence based measures. The aim of this paper was to investigate how nurses can affect nutritional status in elderly people with malnutrition. The study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductive approach. The result was based on nine articles. Three categories were formed: Assessment of nutrition status, Multidisciplinary cooperation and, Supporting the Elderly. Collaboration between the nurse and other professions was identified as an important factor in increasing knowledge about the elderly's nutritional status. By using assessment tools, the work was structured and an overall picture of the elderly's health was created. Nursing's correct knowledge of nutrition is considered important for improving nutritional status among the elderly. Prevention of malnutrition can be accomplished by taking measures that support the elderly by providing: individually adapted diets, company, energy and protein enrichment, and following up on eating habits.
