Nurses' experiences of using videoconferencing in nursing care : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Ehealth services are becoming ubiquitous within healthcare. There is limited knowledge about nurses' experiences of videoconferencing technology in nursing. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of using videoconferencing within nursing care. Method: A general literature overview of contemporary scientific research within nursing care was conducted. A systematic search in three article databases resulted in 72 articles which were examined. Fifteen qualitative research articles (two mixed method) were included in the study. Result: From a content analysis, four categories emerged: the multidimensional function of videoconference, the impact of videoconference on user’s relationships, the impact of videoconference on nurses’ work and role, technical challenges when using videoconference. Conclusion: Nurses see videoconferencing as a useful communication method that simulates face-to-face meetings, that enhances the sense of closeness, elevates nurse awareness of the patient situation and provides extra sense of security in multi-professional interactions. However, nurses’ experiences include changed relationships, altered power relations and technical issues, but find strategies to compensate for these changes and shortcomings.
