2017 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Although the Internet is dominant, other types of media such as radio, television ornewspapers are not necessarily excluded but are rather a complement to already establishedmedia habits. This study aims at highlighting the media as an authority that forms the life ofyoung individuals, where young people's self-perception and body image are used to illustratethe influence of media. This is done with the questions "how has media increased itsinfluential role in relation to the secondary socialization process?" and "how does mediaaffect adolescents in the age 16-19 when it comes to body image and self-perception?” This isexplained using the theories “the social construction of reality” which highlights the dialecticsbetween actor and media as an institution, and “the network society.” The survey was of aquantitative nature and surveys have been used. The selected group consisted of 64 highschool students (16-19 years), of whom 36 were women and 28 were men. The surveyconsisted of 11 questions. The result showed a correlation between media's impact on thebody image and self-perception, and the socialization process that is continuously changingand unfolding before us.
