Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

All children have the right to participate in decision that affects them and have the right to express their views in all matters concerning them. Despite this, children are not involved as much as they want. Research emphasise the importance of children being involved in health care, this is of great importance to their experience of health. The aim of the study was to describe children’s (8-11 years) experience of participation in relation to anaesthesia. The study was conducted with a descriptive qualitative design and an inductive approach. Data was collected by narrative interviews with 10 children experienced anaesthesia. Qualitative content analysis was chosen to describe the variations, differences and similarities in children's experience of participation regarding anaesthesia. The result showed that the information the child received, the interaction with the health care professionals and the environment and circumstances in the operating ward influences the children’s experiences of participation. The children’s experiences of participation were related to before, during and after  anaesthesia and day surgery. Children in this study experiences a major gap regarding information about pre-, per- and postoperative care. They describe the negative effects of waiting and the importance of the existence of good age-appropriate activities for distraction. The children also describe that the physical environment of the operating theatre has great importance to their experience of well-being. The findings indicate that children’s opportunities for participation in the context of anaesthetic care needs to be improved in order to meet the needs from a child’s perspective. There is need for further research on which interventions nurse anaesthetist could use in order to increase children's participation in the daily work.
